MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Some Montgomery County residents have come together in hopes of pressuring the county commission to be more transparent about how they’re spending their tax dollars.

After this year’s tax assessment results were released, residents of Montgomery County began to have questions - questions they say they are still waiting on the answers to. But a newly formed coalition is hoping to change that.

“Tell me what you’re doing tell me where my money is going. Tell me what you’re gonna do for me.”

The recent tax assessment has residents of the county concerned, and even confused about where the money is going, so a group they call the Informed Citizen Coalition started asking those questions.

“We wanted it to offer a way for citizens to come and come to us and we are willing to do the work for them. So if that’s digging into something that they have a question about or call when you get information about something, they were not finding out a way to advocate for them somehow,” said Angel Gilreath with the Informed Citizen Coalition.

However, the commission says that in terms of transparency, they are doing all they can to stay as transparent as they can.

“I feel as if we’re doing everything we can to be transparent. They have one question and requested numerous open record request,” said County Commissioner Chad Kenney.

Commissioner Chad Kenney points to open records requests filled by the county as well as printed off financial breakdowns of county spending saying he doesn’t want citizens to feel as if they are in the dark.

“I have no problem with the citizens forming a coalition and asking questions. I haven’t been contacted by a single one of them. All they have to do is reach out to the county commissioners. Every single one of us definitely will answer the questions and do whatever they can to get them the answer they’re looking for,” said Commissioner Kenney

Commission Chairman Leland Adams says that when it comes to transparency, it’s a two-way street.

“Their thing is to stand up in the meetings, and say transparency, transparency. I need you to be more transparent. My question then is what are you not seeing? If I don’t know what you’re not seeing, I can’t share it,” said Commission Chairman Adams.

The coalition says they will continue to go to meetings and ask the questions to help keep their members informed

“There were things that we felt that we needed to look into so as we looked through laws and in assessment itself, we just had a lot of questions. So that’s what we did, we asked the questions,” said Gilreath.

Those in attendance say that they hope this group will show the county that they are paying attention while also helping them learn more about the country’s government.

SPRINGFIELD – Medicaid recipients need to keep a close eye on their mailboxes.

More than 90 million individuals can expect Medicaid redetermination notices to arrive. The letters for Effingham County residents will come from the Georgia Department of Human Services.

Georgia Legal Services Program Paralegal Kat Montgomery explained the situation to Effingham County Senior Citizens Center members on Aug. 3.

“If you don’t respond to the letter, they will terminate your health care because they are going to assume that you don’t need it anymore,” she warned.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Congress passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act which allowed Medicaid recipients to remain eligible for continuous coverage even if their eligibility status changed during the public health emergency that ended in May.

“They wanted to make sure everyone had health care,” Montgomery said.

Redetermination is the process that Georgia and the rest of the states must follow to make sure that current Medicaid members are still eligible for coverage. This involves collecting and verifying information, including income and contact details, as well as other requested items related to determining eligibility.

Medicaid is a federal system of health insurance for those requiring financial assistance.

“If you receive Medicaid services or the state pays for any part of your health insurance, this applies to you,” Montgomery said. “You are going to have to recertify your income, which is something that people have not had to do since (the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020).

“That’s why it’s important. We want everyone to be aware that this is happening.”

The redetermination process started in April but no one at the center has received a notice as of yet. Montgomery said she knows of only one person in her 11-county GLSP region who has.

Montgomery suggested a few ways to update contact information to help ensure a redetermination letter is received.

“They are going to send you a letter around the time (of the year) that you originally signed up for these services,” she said. “If you don’t know when you signed up, you can check Gateway (https://m.gateway.ga.gov.) You can also go up to the (Department of Family Services Office) and talk to someone, which is what I recommend doing.”

DFACS case managers are available by appointment only. The phone number for the Effingham County office, located at 214 Franklin St., Springfield, is 912-754-6471.

Montgomery also suggested contacting DFACS via email at customerserviceDHS@dhs.ga.gov or calling 1-877-423-4746.

“These are just ways to update your contact information so that you get the notice,” she said. “That’s kind of Step One … If that stuff is not updated in their system -- and It’s been about three or four years since they made everyone do this -- they might not have the updated information.

“That’s why we are pushing people to make sure their information is updated.”

Georgia must complete all redeterminations, pending eligibility actions, disenrollments and appeals, by May 31, 2024.

In less than two years, 189 units of affordable housing will be occupied on Georgia Avenue, not far from the Forest Glen Metro Station, bus routes and shopping in both Silver Spring and Wheaton.

Groundbreaking for the Residences at Forest Glen Thursday marked the start of MHP’s (Montgomery Housing Partnership) largest housing project and one of the largest affordable units in Montgomery County.

The $100 million project will include space for residents to enjoy the outdoors, two bike rooms, a fitness and a business center, underground parking and a dog washing station. MHP will offer educational and supportive programing for young residents and families.

Funding for the project comes from private donations, the county, state and federal governments.

A 72-unit apartment complex was demolished to make way for the new construction.

It took six years from when MHP purchased the land until today to begin construction. During that time, the land was rezoned, the pandemic hit, building prices skyrocketed and interest rates rose, said Robert Goldman, MHP president.

The 2.6-acre property will include all affordable housing units. Rents will depend on the occupant’s earnings. Three-quarters of the units are for those making 60% or less than the area median income.

Work is by Bozzuto Construction. It is the sixth time that company has worked with MHP, creating a total of about 1,000 affordable units, said President Mark Weisner.
